Export a data backup file of your instance

If you're migrating a Confluence Data Center instance to a cloud site, you can now use the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant.

We ended support of Confluence Server on February 15, 2024. Confluence Data Center is our only self-managed product offering, and our primary product offering outside of Confluence Cloud.

Atlassian is also currently working on a new backup and restore solution.

This page tells you how to get a copy of all the content in your Confluence Cloud instance using the backup manager. To export individual pages or spaces instead of the whole site in a variety of formats (including comma-separated values), see Export Content to Word, PDF, HTML and XML.

After exporting the data via the backup manager, you can import the data into another Confluence Cloud instance, as described below.

You can also save the backup file, as a way of taking occasional offline backups.

The Cloud service takes backups for your instance every 24 hours for purposes of application recovery (not for rolling back application data). See About Your Data for more information.

Back up (export) your Confluence instance

Only one backup file is stored at a time. Any existing backup is overwritten by the new one.

We regularly make backups of your data for application recovery purposes. However, these backups cannot be used to roll back changes. Learn more about how we back up your data.

To back up all data of your Confluence instance:

  1. Select the wheel icon () in the top-right corner to open Confluence administration.

  2. Find Settings > Data management in the left-hand navigation.

  3. Select Backup manager.

  4. If you want to include attachments, select Backup attachments.

  5. Choose Create backup for cloud.

After the backup is complete, you will see the link to the backup file. You can download the file by following the link. This link is available for 14 days.

What data is backed up?

The backup includes the following data:

  • Each space’s default classification level when applicable

  • Pages, including their classification level when applicable

  • Whiteboards

  • Selected user and group settings, such as permissions.

    • The backup does not include the full set of user and group settings because this process is intended to restore data to the same Atlassian site with its existing user account data.

  • Team calendar data

  • Attachments (if selected)

    • The backup will include all attachments, including those in the archive or trash. This may cause a difference in the size of the backup file versus your reported storage usage.

Soft-deleted spaces (spaces placed in the trash) will not be backed up. If you want to back up a space that is in the trash, you must first retrieve it from the trash.

We can’t currently export databases

They will appear in the tree when exported but won’t retain their content, data, or functionality.

Import the backup data to Confluence Data Center

You can import the backup data into Confluence Data Center 6.0 or later.  This will overwrite all the content on that site. See Migrate from Confluence Cloud to Data Center.

Data classification is a cloud feature, so while that information is backed up in the export file, it won’t appear in Confluence Data Center.

If you plan to import this backup in Confluence Data Center, a site admin should perform the export. Because site admins can view all email addresses in the site, this ensures all user data is included in the export, regardless of profile visibility settings.

Import the backup data to Confluence Cloud

You can import the backup data into another Confluence Cloud instance, thus overwriting all the content on that site. Refer to the instructions on importing a Confluence Cloud instance.

If your source site includes other applications in addition to Confluence, the cross-application links in the site, such as links to a source file page or to a Jira issue, will point back to the corresponding location after the import.

Maximum supported size

Confluence cloud backup file can be up to 30 GB in total size, plus 800 GB of attachments.
