Change the Confluence Home welcome message

Give the default homepage some personality by adding a custom welcome or primary announcement.

The message appears at the top of the Announcements section in the Home tab — and is perfect for adding an important communication, useful links, or a fun photo from your last office party or team outing.

You'll need Confluence administrator permissions to edit it.

A message at the top of Announcements within "Discover what's happening" reads, "Welcome to myCloud".

To edit the Home welcome message:

  1. Select the wheel icon () in the top-right corner to open Confluence administration.

  2. Find Settings in the left-hand navigation.

  3. Select Configuration > Global templates and blueprints.

  4. Scroll down to System templates and locate the Default Welcome Message.

  5. Select Edit.

  6. Add your content, then select Save.

To go back to the original welcome message, select Reset to default next to the Default Welcome Message template.

Hints for using the template editor

The welcome message is a template, not a page, so you'll be using the template editor to make your changes.

You can add text, links, and macros, as you would in any Confluence page, but the process for adding files, including images, is a little different.

You can't upload an image or other file into a template directly. First you'll need to upload the file to a page in Confluence. Then, in the template, choose Insert > Files > Search on other pages to embed the file or image.

You can't use template variables in the welcome message.

Allowing other people to edit the welcome message

You can allow people who aren't Confluence administrators edit the welcome message. To do this, Insert the include page macro to include content from elsewhere in Confluence rather than adding content directly to the template.

To include content from a page in the welcome message:

  1. Create a new page in a space that's visible to all users. It's important that all users can see content in that space. If a person doesn't have permission to view the space where you've created the page, they won't be able to see the page content on the dashboard.

  2. Add some text, images or macros, and publish the page.

  3. Restrict who can edit the page (this is optional, but useful if you only want to allow some people to change the content).

  4. Edit the welcome message template (as described above) and Insert the include page macro to include the contents of your newly created page.

  5. Save the template.

People with permission to edit the page will now be able to make changes at any time, and their changes will be visible on the dashboard as soon as the page is saved.
