Create and edit a project

As a Jira administrator, you can create projects for all Jira applications that have been added to your site. To create company-managed projects, you must have the Administer Jira global permissions. Jira admins create and manage company-managed projects using schemes.

  • To create team-managed projects, you must have the Create team-managed projects global permission. Learn more about creating team-managed projects.

  • You can view, delete, or move a Jira application project to trash only if you have access to that application. For example, you'll need Jira Service Management application access to work in a service project.

To create a company-managed project:

  1. Choose Settings > Projects.

  2. Select Create project.

  3. Choose Company-managed project.

  4. Give your project a name.

  5. To change your project template, select Change under Template. Then, select one of the available project templates (e.g. scrum software development).

Project templates appear based on the Jira products you have subscribed to. For example, if you subscribe to Jira Service Management, you can create projects using the IT service desk and Customer service desk templates.

You can also create a project with a shared configuration to use the permissions, workflows, issue types and other schemes from an existing project.

You can also import a project and its issues from other tools. See Migrating from other issue trackers for more info.

  6. Once you select a project type or an existing project for shared configuration, click Create.

If you're creating a project using a template related to a Jira product you currently do not have access to, Jira will display a checkbox that will allow you to grant yourself access to that application. This will add you to the default group of that application, and you will count as a user for that license.

  • You can't edit project permissions or roles on the Free plan for Jira, and you can't configure issue-level security on any Free plan (including Jira Service Management). Find out more about how project permissions work in Free plans. To take advantage of Jira's powerful project permission management features, upgrade your plan.

  • Organization admins and authorized Guard Detect admins can see project titles in audit logs and security alerts. They won’t be able to see project content, just the title.
