What is the new navigation in Jira?

This page is for the new navigation, which we’re currently rolling out. If you don’t have the new navigation yet, sign up for the new navigation or read documentation for the old navigation.

The new navigation is centred around customization capabilities and ease-of-use improvements. With a design familiar to anyone who uses software products, we’re creating a new navigation that’ll eventually fit all Atlassian products.

Key features

Jira's new navigation with projects

Work across multiple projects and boards straight from the sidebar.

  • Your work: A personalized hub with your recent projects, items you’ve worked on, content you’ve viewed, work you’re assigned to, starred items, and more.

  • Recent: Projects, issues, boards, filters, and dashboards you’ve visited, edited, or created.

  • Starred: Essential items you’ve marked with a star.

Customize your sidebar

Customize Jira's sidebar

Show, reorder, and hide navigation items by going to More () > Customize sidebar.

  1. Customize your sidebar

  2. Drag the line to customize

  3. Drag the item or check the checkbox to show, reorder, or hide

    1. Show items: To add items to your sidebar, simply drag them above the Hide from sidebar line.

    2. Hide items: To remove items from your sidebar, drag them below the Hide from sidebar line. Alternatively, drag the Hide from sidebar line above the items you want to hide.

    3. Reorder items: To rearrange the order of items in your sidebar, drag them to your preferred positions.

Use (up and down arrow keys) from your keyboard to reorder items in your sidebar.

Show or hide the sidebar

Jira's collapse and expand

If the sidebar takes up too much space, you can either resize or collapse it. You’ll always be able to expand the sidebar when you need to navigate again.

Tip: Press ] to expand and [ to collapse the sidebar.

Horizontal project navigation

Jira's horizontal tab navigation in projects

Admins can reorder and remove project tabs. By personalizing the project tabs to your project’s needs, your team will be able to more seamlessly switch between views.

Project settings in two places

As an admin, you can find project settings in two places. To access project settings:

  • Next to your project's name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Project settings.

  • Next to your project’s name when you’re inside a project, select More actions (), then Project settings.

Quick access to filters and dashboards

Jira's new navigation showing filters and dashboards

Easily access filters and dashboards from anywhere in Jira.

  • Starred filters and dashboards: Mark your frequently used filters and dashboards with a star to bring them to the top.

  • Recent filters and dashboards: When you visit, edit, or create filters and dashboards they’ll show up under Recent.

Apps

Apps in Jira's new navigation

Access Apps from the sidebar. Admins can select More actions () next to Apps to find and manage apps.

Manage your rollout (admin only)

This feature is only available when the new navigation reaches your Jira site but before it’s automatically turned on. Admins will be notified with a banner when this feature becomes available.

When a large change is introduced to your team, proper planning can go a long way. To help your team adapt comfortable to the new navigation, we’ve added a way for admins to control the team’s rollout. Before we turn the new navigation on automatically, admins can:

  • Turn on the new navigation only for themselves

  • Turn on the new navigation for everyone on the Jira site

Your Jira site will automatically switch to the new navigation a few weeks after it becomes available to admins, even if no admin has manually turned it on.

To manage your rollout as an admin:

  1. From the top right corner, select Settings () > General settings.

  2. Go to Jira Labs and find New navigation.

  3. Toggle Turn on just for you.

  4. Test the new navigation yourself and prepare your team.

  5. When you’re ready for your entire team to use the new navigation, select Turn on for everyone.

If you manually turn the new navigation on for your entire team, your users will be able to temporarily switch back to the old navigation. When we eventually move them to the new navigation, they won’t be able to use the old navigation anymore.
