Mirroring cards

Card mirroring is a great way to stay in sync across boards. It lets you view and edit a card from multiple locations, and ensures that changes are reflected on all mirrored versions of the original card.

Card mirroring is only available in paid Workspaces. If you try to mirror a card in a free Workspace, it will instead create a Link card.

Mirror a card

Mirror a card to another location where you want to be able to view and edit that card.

To mirror a card:

  1. Open the card

  2. Select Mirror from the list of actions

  3. Choose a board, list, and position where you want to mirror the card

There are a few other ways to mirror a card in a paid Workspace:

  • Just like Link cards, you can mirror a card by adding its URL to a new card's title.

  • Create automation rules to automatically mirror a card based on specific triggers or actions, such as when a card is moved to a particular list or when a due date is approaching.

To mirror a card with automation:

  1. When adding actions to an automation, select the Add/Remove category

  2. Find the create a card action

  3. Select mirror from the card type dropdown

View a Mirror card

To view a Mirror card, a person needs access to the board that contains the original card. If they don’t have access to the original board, the Mirror card’s contents will be hidden and they’ll see a button to request access to the original board instead.

Edit or view the source card

When you open a Mirror card, you're viewing and editing the source card. Some actions, such as using Power-Ups, Card button automations, and deleting the card, are not available without navigating to the original card's location.

Archiving the source card won’t archive any cards mirroring it. Instead, they’ll show a message saying the source has been archived.

Archive a Mirror card

When you open a Mirror card, you’re editing the source, including the Archive action.

To archive a Mirror card:

  1. Open the board that contains the Mirror card

  2. Hover over the mirror card without opening it

  3. Select Edit card (pencil)

  4. Select Archive card

Or, hover over the Mirror card without opening it, and press c.

Archiving a mirror card in this way won’t affect the source card.

Expand or collapse details on Mirror cards

A mirror card has a special label and border that reflect the board and list where the original card is located.

It also shows any members, and badges such as attachments, checklists, dates, and custom fields.

To show or hide the badges and list name for all Mirror cards on the board, hover over any mirror card and select Expand all mirror cards or Collapse all mirror cards.

Example use cases

Card mirroring is designed to enhance your Trello experience by providing greater flexibility and control over your tasks:

  • Personal productivity:

    • Avoid extra work caused by duplicating cards on different boards. Mirror them instead so you can see changes wherever you access them.

    • Automatically mirror a card to your personal board whenever a task is assigned to you.

    • Mirror cards within the same board when a card belongs in multiple lists, and you want to keep all versions the same.

  • Team collaboration:

    • Facilitate collaboration among different teams by sharing cards between boards, allowing each team to maintain their own board while working on shared initiatives.

    • Create a large board that tracks your progress on different client boards, so you can have a big picture of everything you’re working from different sources.

  • Exclusive to paid Workspaces

  • Offer a full view and edit capability of the original card from another board

  • Allow real-time updates and interactions with the card

  • Provide access to the original card back without leaving your current board

One-way sync

If you need to maintain a parent/child relationship between cards, where data flows in only one direction, you can still use the previous method through Trello’s automation to push updates from one card to another. For instance, the following automation will sync comments from one card to another:

  • when a comment is added to a card, find the first card linked in the attachments, and add comment "New comment on card {triggercardlink} by {username}: {commenttext}"

Third-party Power-ups: There are options for setting up varying levels of one and two way sync between boards and cards in Power-Ups developed by third-parties external to Trello, you can search for these here - https://trello.com/power-ups/search?q=sync

Mirror cards on mobile

Mirror cards on mobile by pasting the URL as the title of a new card. They display the card title and board name, similar to the free version, but the paid version allows opening the card back without leaving the current board.
